In Māori legend, the North Island - Te Ika a Māui (the fish of Māui)  was foul hooked by Māui at a mountain in the North of Hawke's Bay.  If you view the Hawke's Bay area from the sea you can see that the area is naturally shaped like a traditional Polynesian fish hook.  This is why Māori named the area Te Matau a Māui - the fish hook of Maui. Our waka is proudly named after the area.
